History Tour About Jacob Ake came to Williamsburg from Maryland in 1790. Unlike many who came around that time, he was not looking for a location to build an iron furnace. He simply loved the area, especially the large spring, and decided to move here. He purchased 600 acres of land at $6 per acre in 1795. A surveyor plotted out 120 lots for people to lease and 5 streets. Front and Second Streets ran parallel to the river while High, Plum, and Spring Streets ran perpendicular to the river. What started as an elementary history lesson, has since turned into a tour on foot through the community that a local retired teacher does a few times a year. Our History 1795 Originally known as Aketown, Williamsburg was founded by German immigrant Jacob Ake in 1795. The location was chosen by Ake for its access to the Juniata River, as well as “The Big Spring'', which provides the area with 5 million gallons of water each day. The town was given its current name in 1810 by its founder in honor of his son, William. 1827 By 1827, the town was incorporated by the state as a borough. The area was home to a grist mill, saw mill, leather tannery, iron furnace, wool mill, and many acres of fertile farm lands. The town also had blacksmiths, barrel makers, distillers, weavers, cobblers, shopkeepers, stable operators, and tavern keepers. 1832 The Pennsylvania Main Line Canal opened in 1932, following the Juniata River through Williamsburg. It became the major form of transportation for several years and connected the two major metropolises of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The canal remained in use in Williamsburg until 1875. 1873 The Williamsburg line of the Pennsylvania Railroad opened in 1873. Originally bypassed by the rail line in 1852, this branch soon became the major mode of transportation for the area. This allowed local quarries and mines to supply industries in Johnstown and Pittsburgh with limestone and iron. 1905 Construction on the Williamsburg Paper Manufacturing Company was completed in 1905, having begun two years prior. After the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Co. purchased it in 1906, the paper production became Williamsburg’s major industry. 1989 Rails to Trails of Central Pennsylvania Inc. purchased the first eleven miles of the Lower Trail in 1989. The trail followed the rail corridor, which was abandoned in 1979. In 1994, the 5.5 mile trail extension was purchased, completing the 16.5 mile trail. 2021 President Biden signed the September 11th National Memorial Trail into law on October 13, 2021. The September 11th National Memorial Trail is a 1,300 mile multi-use route, which includes the Lower Trail, that links the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA. - Flora & Fauna | Explore Williamsburg
Flora & Fauna Williamsburg is located in Blair County, which has over 1,000 confirmed flora and fauna species. Williamsburg has a total land area of 0.4 square miles, much of which is forested. The forested areas are deciduous North Appalachian forests, which are primarily populated by Maple trees. The primary trees were once American Chestnut and Green and White Ash trees, but they have since died off, likely due to climate change. Still, the soil remains rich for natural plant growth and commercial farming. In fact, the Williamsburg soil contains a lot of fly ash, which is attributed to the coal burning activity of an electricity production company that was previously located in the area. Over the years, climate change has introduced nonnative plants and animals to the area that disrupt the ecosystem. So, it is important to encourage native biodiversity to keep the ecosystem stable. It is especially important to continue planting trees and encourage biodiversity along the trails of Williamsburg because the forest is quite ‘mature’. In response, there are initiatives being led by local volunteers. Explore more! Species Conservation Efforts Nature Tour

Conservation Efforts Leadership Greg Williams (left) and Cynthia Potter (right) Greg Williams graduated from the University of Kansas and first started teaching in California, where he fell in love with Point Reyes National Seashore as he took classes there for week-long stays. He eventually taught himself how to be an environmental educator and science teacher at Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley and in Ohio and Philadelphia. He created programs for several schools where kids did habitat restoration and made management decisions for school land. In retirement, he felt compelled to do what he could to reverse the damage of climate change and served on the Board of Pennsylvania Interfaith Power and Light for 6 years where he formed a partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to plant and distribute native trees and shrubs throughout Pennsylvania. Cynthia Potter graduated from Penn State and became the first naturalist at Penn State's Shavers Creek Environmental Center. She specialized in wildflower 'walks and talks' there and still loves learning and teaching about plants. She also has a strong interest in birds, reptiles, and amphibians and a passionate interest in moths and butterflies and has provided most of these natural history photos. She tries to walk 4-5 miles everyday on a portion of the Lower Trail and, from Spring to Fall does citizen science reporting on iNaturalist on the moths and butterflies, both adults and larvae, that she finds there, and at night, on our back porch and has identified over 350 different species and continues to try and find more. Both Greg and Cynthia find great joy, excitement, and spirituality in being in the natural world and getting to know the flora and fauna of the Williamsburg area while doing what they can to help the natural world heal the planet. Greg first started recruiting volunteers for habitat restoration on the Lower Trail in November of 2016. Since then, hundreds of volunteers have worked to remove non-native invasive plants and plant or distribute over 15,000 native trees and shrubs. Partnerships and Projects Williamsburg has partnered with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) since 2018, and the Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light (PA IPL) since the Fall of 2019. The PA IPL and CBF are both non-profit organizations that promote wildlife restoration in response to climate change. The two organizations provide materials for removing invasive plants and planting native species, including trees and shrubs, tubes, and stakes. Trails About The Lower Trail runs northeastward for almost 17 miles between Canoe Creek State Park in Blair County and Alexandria in Huntingdon County. It has a 85% rolled crushed limestone surface, except for a 2-mile asphalt section that runs through the Borough of Williamsburg. The Lower Trail is part of the Mid State Trail and the Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway. It has also been designated a National Recreation Trail by the National Park Service and is part of the 9/11 National Memorial Trail. The Mid State Trail is a long main trail network (323 miles), following the original portion of the Lower Trail. It has many side trails located in the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians and Allegheny Plateau of Central Pennsylvania. The Trail is known for the highest knob, the sharpest ridgelines, and some of the most dramatic views awaiting intrepid hikers. The Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway is a 320-mile corridor that follows the historic path of the Main Line Canal System. It intends to serve as a physical connector that improves opportunities for public access, linkage to important destinations, and economic development. History 1979 The rail corridor was abandoned. Over the next 8 years, the rails were sold for scrap and the corridor put up for sale. 2004 A 5 ½ mile extension was added to the trail. 1800s Much of the Lower Trail was part of the original towpath of the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal. The Pennsylvania Railroad acquired this property and developed it into the Petersburg Branch of the PRR. 1989 Rails to Trails of Central Pennsylvania Inc. purchased the first 11 miles of the Lower Trail, Williamsburg to Alfarata, from the Penn Central Corp. Present The trail continues to attract between 70,000 and 100,ooo visitors annually. Distinctive Features When traveling along the trail, either by foot or bike, you can see many remnants of the canal era, including remains of locks, foundations of lock tenders' houses, and the historical Mt. Etna iron plantation area. There are also a number of bridge crossings of the Juniata River and one covered bridge over the tail race of a historic mill stream. The trail supports many different plant and animal species. The Audubon Society has identified portions of the Lower Trail as “Important Bird Areas”. A number of Bald Eagles and Osprey have been spotted along the trail. There are also many beautiful and some rare plant species along the trail. Trailheads Trailheads are called "Stations" because when the railroad ran, there were station stops there. All trailheads have a parking lot, pavilion with tables, and a restroom. Food, beverages, gas, and pharmacies are also available in Williamsburg, Hollidaysburg, Alexandria, Altoona, and Huntingdon. There are a total of 6 trailheads from US Rt.22: Alfarata Station, Mt Etna Station, Cove Dale Station, Williamsburg Station, Ganister Station, and Flowing Spring Station. Traveling Through The Lower Trail The Lower Trail is open year-round. In the warmer seasons visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, and bird watching. In the colder seasons visitors can enjoy cross country skiing and non-motorized snowshoeing. Shelters and benches can be found in many places along the trail – for rest, enjoying nature, and protection from unexpected weather. Toilet facilities are at trailheads only. There is no drinking water available on the trail and cellphone reception may not be reliable. Want to learn more? Species Trees Shrubs Flowers Insects Birds Mammals Reptiles and Amphibians Fish trees Within Blair County, there are about 400 total species of plants and 600 total species of animals. Below are some of the more common native and non-native trees, shrubs, and flowers along the Lower Trail and within Williamsburg. Trees White Mulberry morus alba American Sycamore platanus occidentalis Northern Red Oak quercus rubra Red Maple acer rubrum Flowering Dogwood cornus florida Tree-of-Heaven ailanthus altissima Staghorn Sumac rhus typhina Tulip Poplar liriodendron tulipifera Fun fact: The tree-of-heaven is a non-native, invasive tree that populates about 10 or so more trees when cut down. To prevent the spread of this invasive tree, conservationists must cut hatches every couple of inches and spray herbicides in the hatches. This method of removing tree-of-heaven trees is being used and can be seen along the trail. Shrubs Common Ninebark physocarpus opulifolius Butterfly Bush buddleja davidii Common Privet ligustrum vulgare Black Elderberry sambucus canadensis Multiflora Rose rosa polyantha Northern Spicebush lindera benzoin Arrowood viburnum dentatum American Honeysuckle Lonicera canadensis Fun fact: Common privet is a type of non-native, invasive hedge that grows quickly and thickly covering other plants, preventing them from getting the nutrients they need. There are some sections along the Lower Trail where visitors can not see the river due to a thick blanket of privet. Shrubs Flowers Woodland Sunflower helianthus hirsutus Red Deadnettle lamium purpureum Tall Goldenrod solidago altissima Bloodroot sanguinaria canadensis Coltsfoot tussilago farfara Dutchman's Breeches dicentra cucullaria Purple Coneflower echinacea purpurea Fun fact: Tall Goldenrod is a native wildflower that helps honeybees and native pollinator plants thrive. Flowers Insects Boxelder Bug boisea trivittata Chinese Mantis tenodera sinensis Northern Walkingstick diapheromera femorata Six-spotted Tiger Beetle cicindela sexguttata Monarch danaus plexippus Imperial Moth eacles imperialis Green Stink Bug chinavia hilaris Fun fact: The Imperial Moth is a common moth that is easy to find amongst the trail since it is as big as your hand. Insects Birds Bald Eagle haliaeetus leucocephalus Kingfisher megaceryle alcyon Carolina Wren thryothorus ludovicianus Mallard anas platyrhynchos Tree Swallow tachycineta bicolor Bluebird sialia sialis Tufted Titmouse baeolophus bicolor Pileated Woodpecker dryocopus pileatu Fun fact: Bluebird and Tree Swallows nesting boxes are placed along the trail. Both bluebirds and tree swallows are extremely territorial, so alternating nesting boxes prevent these birds from competing over places to nest. Birds Mammals Common Raccoon procyon lotor American Mink neogale vison River Otter lontra canadensis Eastern Gray Squirrel sciurus carolinensis Woodland Vole microtus pinetorum White-tailed Deer odocoileus virginianus Fun fact: You will see plastic tubes among the trees along the trail. The reason is due to trees not having a strong enough trunk to withstand the wind and buck rub. Bucks tend to use young Staghorn Sumac trees to rub the velvet off their growing antlers in the summer. Mammals Reptiles and Amphibans Garden Snail cornu aspersum American Toad anaxyrus americanus Snapping Turtle chelydra serpentina Red Salamander pseudotriton ruber Black Rat Snake pantherophis obsoletus Wood Frog lithobates sylvaticus Fun fact: In the spring, hundreds of wood frogs sit in pools of water near the river calling. From a distance, this chorus can sound like a gathering of ducks. Reptiles andAmphibans Fish Fish Brown Trout salmo trutta Carp cyprinus carpio Smallmouth Bass micropterus dolomieu Redbreast Sunfish lepomis auritus Chain Pickerel esox niger White Sucker catostomus commersonii Fun fact: Brown trout are stocked in 45 states as it is a popular game fish.
